Locked Out of Your Bedroom?

Portland locksmith bedroom door lock open
If you are one of those people that have a lock on your bedroom or even an in home office, then I am pretty sure that you have locked yourself out on an occasion or two. Not everyone has the type of locks that you can grab a butter knife or screwdriver to open. It is actually very common to have a keyed lock on a bedroom. For some, it is because you have roommates, for others, it may be to hide the Christmas or birthday presents away from the kids.

Whatever the reason may be, what would you do if you get locked out? How about calling your local licensed, bonded, and insured locksmith in Portland? They can come out and help get you back into your room. They have few different methods that they can use to help get your door unlocked. They can pick the lock, shim the lock, or worst case scenario, they can drill the lock.

Picking a door lock can be quick and easy or it can be kind of a pain sometimes. When picking a lock, they use a tension wrench and a pick to push the pins up and turn the key way. Different locksmiths will have different picks that they prefer to use and some will try different picks with the same lock. If this method doesn’t work, they will try to shim the lock next.

When shimming a lock, the locksmith will use a card of different sorts and try to slide it in-between the lock and the strike plate. Some locks are really easy to do this with and some are not. The locksmith may try to go from the top or bottom of the lock. If the lock can’t be shimmed, then it will need to be drilled. Drilling a lock is just as it sounds. The Portland locksmith will slowly drill through the pins in the key-way so that there is nothing in the way of getting the door opened.

Automotive Lockout

Car lockout Portland locksmith
A scenario many people are familiar with is getting locked out of your vehicle in the least convenient moment. You are late for work getting out from your home, or just done at the grocery store and ready to get all the bags full of groceries inside your vehicle only to realize the keys were left in the ignition switch as you were locking the vehicle. It may be possible or not to resolve the situation without calling a professional locksmith depending on the vehicle make and model as well as the locks on it.

If you got into a situation where you find yourself locked outside of your vehicle, there are few things you can attempt to do in order to gain access before making the decision of calling a professional locksmith or in case you are not able to do so at all. If your vehicle's locking mechanism has buttons on the ledge of the door windows, with the help of a coat hanger, you might be able to pull those button and unlock one of the doors. This can be done by creating a small hook at the end of the hanger and sliding it between the window and the window seal on the side trying to get the loop around the locking mechanism button in order to pull it unlocking the vehicle.

Another good method of gaining entry to a vehicle is through the back seat. This situation involve unlocking the trunk first. If there is an easy access to the trunk of your vehicle , folding the back seats of most make and model vehicles should be fairly simple and would get you an easy access inside the vehicle. For these types of situations you may try hiding a spare key in the trunk just in case. However, on vehicles where the lock release buttons are located on the door handle, most chances that a professional locksmith would be needed in order to gain access,

If you find yourself in this type of lockout situation often, you may want to consider taking few measures. Try think of a spot around the exterior of your vehicle to hide a key. This can be done by putting it inside a magnetic lock box and locate it somewhere no one will attempt to look. In addition, try not to use the power door locks in order to lock your vehicle when you are getting out. This will ensure you will always remember to get the key out of the ignition in order for you to lock the doors manually.

Unlocking Lexus Trunk

Portland locksmith Lexus lockout
As a locksmith technician with many years of experience in the field, I learned that some vehicle are more accessible than others. Meaning, some vehicle models are much easier to get into than others. It mostly depends on the security system of the vehicle and what types of tools are available for the locksmith technician to do the job. Most automotive lockout calls come from customers who left the keys inside the ignition or on the driver seat of their vehicles while locking the door behind them. However, some automotive lockout calls can come from a customer who locked the keys inside the trunk and that is when things would usually become a little trickier.

Few years ago I remember getting a call for a customer who locked the keys inside the trunk of his 03 Lexus. Personally, I didn't have much experience servicing Lexus models before, but I heard that most of them will require a key made or ordered from the dealer in order to get inside the trunk in case of a lockout situation because of their advance alarm system. I didn't have any job on me that day, so I was up for the challenge.

Once I got to the customer's location, I looked up on my automotive guides for the best way to first unlock the vehicle itself and maybe I would be able to use the trunk release in order to pop the trunk. It seemed as the best way to unlock this type of vehicle was using an under the window tool. Because the vehicle was equipped with an alarm system, I knew I would have to have another hand helping me pulling the handle on the same time I would unlock the mechanism before the alarm will lock the mechanism. I had the customer give me a hand and I was able to unlock the vehicle within few minutes.

Next, I reached in for the trunk release, but it was not functioning which I assumed was because the alarm was now activated again. I had to give a call to a Portland locksmith co-worker of mine for some instructions on the procedure to bypass the alarm. According to him, the procedure was very simple. All I needed to do was access the door lock cylinder through a special access port. Once I had it removed, I was able to get to the security switch and activate it with a screwdriver to deactivate the alarm. Once I got the trunk open, the customer was very impressed.

Tinted Windows Maxima Lockout

Nissan Maxima locksmith Portland
As a locksmith technician, every now and then I would get called for a job where I would think it would not be difficult to do, but ended up with a surprise to spoil my "plans". Most jobs I would usually get are automotive lockout services jobs where people forgot the keys inside their vehicles and accidentally locked the door behind them. For most make and model vehicles every professional locksmith technician should have a manual which list most year, make and models and the specific tools that are recommended to get that particular vehicle open. However, there will be times where I found myself improvising from one reason or another.

I remember few years ago I got called to open a 95 Nissan Maxima. Straight forward lockout job I thought to myself especially since I opened several of these models before. I accepted the job, took the customer information and started driving to the location. Once I got to the location, I knew already I had to use an under-the-window tool even without looking at the locksmith manual since I already opened couple of this type of model before. However, as I approached the customer car, I noticed that all windows were heavily tinted which prevented me from using the under-the-window tool since I couldn't see anything that was going on from the inside. The only other tool I had with me that could be use to open the vehicle was a Slim Jim, but with the type of locking mechanism the Nissan Maxima had, I knew I would not get anywhere using this tool.

Out of ideas, I called a fellow Portland locksmith of mine to see if maybe he had any idea of what I can do to unlock the vehicle. He suggested I would use air wedges between the window and door frame which will give me a clear access to unlock the vehicle using a long bar. I did not had these types of sir wedges with me, but I was close to the local locksmith shop, so I made the quick trip to get what was necessary to get the job done and get the customer on his way. After about 10 minutes I was able to come back to the customer's location and started working on the car again. Using the air wedges and a long specialty tool I had in my van, I was able to unlock the vehicle in no time and send the happy customer on his way.

Lexus Lockout Tip

portland-locksmith-lexus
I got a job recently for a lockout on a 2003 Lexus ES300. The customer complained he accidentally locked his keys inside the trunk of the vehicle. Normally, this type of situation requires ordering new keys from the Lexus dealer to be able opening the trunk without having to damaging anything. The other option obviously would be causing damage by drilling the lock.

I did have an idea thou that required tampering with the alarm of the vehicle. This required using the under-the-window tool first in order to get into the car. Once I got inside the car, I had to remove the door panel in order to access the alarm electric wires. However, before attempting to "jump" the alarm system, I noticed there was small access trim panel which was removable. Once I removed it, I noticed there was a screw that when once removed, the door cylinder would be free to remove as well. Very identical to a VW door handle with an exception that only the cylinder by itself could be removed.

I was able to activate the security switch on the cylinder I pulled out using a standard Philips head screwdriver in which at that point disabled the alarm allowing me to use the trunk release lever which was otherwise disabled. I found myself very lucky being able to resolve the situation without having to drill the lock or what other locksmith companies would usually do which is recommend ordering a new key from the dealer.

Picking Tip for Schlage Lock

A while back I got a call from a fellow locksmith technician to do a residential lockout job. When I arrived to the scene, I saw the door had a Schlage F series key in knob type of lock. I didn't really experienced before working with this lock, but as I did the job I learned something new.

If you need to pick an F series Schlage lock, you don't really have to pick it to the open position, but try picking it to the "locked' position (sometimes it works better to pick it to the "close" side) and then, as you are holding the plug in the locked position, use a hooked poke tool to depress the knob retainer and remove the knob.

You can use a pair of sharp pliers to turn the actuator inside the knob to open the door. If the customers has the keys to the lock within reach, re-install the knob and turn the plug back to the normal position. If the keys are not to be found, leave the plug in the picked position, remove the cylinder from the knob, remove the clip and make a key, or simply re-key the lock, whichever more desirable for the customer. Key Extraction For GEO

We had a job coming one night of a customer that accidentally broke off the tip of the key to her 95 Geo Metro. Although there is not a specific procedure that most locksmith technicians do to take care of the problem, this is what I came up with:
First what I did was to use a blank key and broke the tip of approximately as far back as hers had broken off(if the customer has the remainder of their key, you can use it for this next part) and inserted it into the ignition. This gets the tumblers out of the way.
Next, I threaded a spiral extractor down each side of the key, using the millings on the key to guide the extractors.

Then I clamped the key and the extractors together with vice grips, placed as closely to the face of the ignition as I can get them. The key and the extractors should be virtually "welded" together and by the vice-grips. Once that was done, I used a screwdriver handle between the housing and vice grips in leveraged the key and extractors out of the ignition. The tip of the broken key came right along with them.
